A Yoga Weekend with Desiree Rumbaugh

Theme. Times, and Prices TBA

Desiree Rumbaugh is an internationally recognized yoga teacher with unquenchable enthusiasm for life, love and healing. She blends playful humor with an authentic inquiry into the nature of being to bring the ancient teachings of wisdom into the asana practice and then into modern life.

Her passion for teaching both the art and the science of yoga is fueled in part by her own experience recovering from deep grief as a bereaved parent.

For Desiree, yoga has been a life-saver emotionally as well as physically. With longtime studies in Iyengar and Anusara yoga, she brings 30 years of experience, experimentation and creativity to her ever-evolving, outside-of-the-box style of teaching. She incorporates real life stories and “kitchen table” wisdom into her workshops to remind herself and her students that the key to their happiness and freedom from suffering lies only within the boundaries of their own mind.

Desiree travels the world full time sharing her compassion and her joy with others interested in the transformational power of yoga. She has produced a DVD series entitled “Yoga to the Rescue” and is a regular contributor to Yoga Journal, having also appeared on its cover. Desiree supports the Art of Yoga Project serving teenage girls in the juvenile justice system.

She lives with her husband in southern California.

The forest is made of light and shadows, where everything that flourishes knows too there are dangers and the need to face true vulnerabilities.  To be of the forest demands wisdom, the power of the heart and mind to fathom what is possible and necessary.  All of us will find ourselves in the forest of feelings, under the canopy that shades and protects but also encloses and shrouds us from the light.  In the stories of the Forest Goddesses, drawn from Hindu mythologies and rich folklore, we learn how to navigate through our inner wilderness and manage our way through the dense pathways of a mortal life.  These stories are about living in a world that challenges us just with living, life that invites us to enter all the places where dreams, for better and worse, find a place because we must.  These are the stories we need for an age when so much we’ve hoped for must be renewed, revaluated, and reconsidered.  These are stories of hope, empowered by honesty, candor, and effort.  We need the wisdom of the forest more than ever and here we find resources and tools for making our journey forward. We will learn mantra, explore the practice of mudras, and take these teachings and ideas into our daily lives and yoga practice. No previous knowledge is expected or required.  Bring an open mind and a willing heart.

Douglas Brooks is a scholar of Hinduism, south Asian languages, and the comparative study of religions.   He lived in India with his teacher, Dr. Gopala Aiyar Sundaramoorthy, for many years studying and practicing Srividya, Auspicious Wisdom, and the modern traditions of goddess-centered Tantra.  Currently Professor of Religion at the University of Rochester, he holds both Masters and his doctoral degrees from Harvard University.

Stimulating Marma Points with Moxibustion and Cupping

Stimulating Marma Points with Moxibustion and Cupping

There are many safe and effective methods for stimulating marma points common to both ayurveda and traditional chinese medicine. Moxabustion and cupping are two of the most common and user-friendly for the lay practitioner. moxa "wool" is derived from the mugwort plant, (artemisia vulgaris) and may be burned (without pain or scarring!) over many points. Cupping is a method of treating the points via suction instead of pressure. Sonam will demonstrate easy methods for both of these techniques and then we will have a supervised practice session. Personal modesty will be respected at all times. These are profound healing modalities that are fun and easy to apply. The materials are commonly available making them akin to what's called "grandmother ayurveda" or the "barefoot doctor's" tradition. This work is truly the yoga of medicine and the medicine of yoga!    Cost: $50

Looking Beneath the Surface: Stories of Nagas and other Creatures of the Dark with Professor Douglas Brooks

Each of us holds within us the depths and complexities of our private experiences, the feelings and thoughts that we often keep silent, that emerge from our subconscious or inhabit our dreams.  In our waking consciousness we grapple and contend with our experiences while in the vast, and largely unexplored worlds of our inner self we collect these images, thoughts, and feelings where they inhabit our emotions and untold stories.  In India's traditions these interior movements, that slither and lurk, the kind that are comfortable in shade and shadow and sleep are called Nagas or serpents.

Everywhere one looks, across the entirety of India's storytelling traditions and vast iconographies, there are images of serpents, sometimes appearing as snakes and other times as serpentine creatures, half-snake, half-something-else.  And everywhere we find them, we meet another story about what lies within us, often hidden, always rich and valuable.  Humans may have some innate fear or trepidation about snakes but nagas in Indian lore are essential keys to our personal development: the heart of yoga tradition is the notion of waking up Kundalini, the inner serpent.  What are these naga-experiences, who is Kundalini and why is she a naga?  What are we to make of these living denizens of our shadows, dreams, and hidden desires?  There are so many illuminating stories and images to help us experience our inner nagas in shadow and light.

Winter Solstice Meditation Retreat

The Winter Solstice is a time for renewal. It is the time of year when the nights are the longest. Soon we will turn that corner and the days will become longer. It is the perfect time to align with nature and create a vision of your life for the coming year. Join us to deepen your intentions with chanting, meditating, and celebrating in good company!

The practice of meditation is of great value in bringing one deeper into the many levels of awareness that reside in the heart. In this fast moving society meditation practice grants the mind serenity, the heart freedom and the body deep rest. Meditation is a great way to reset and de-stress the mind, heart, and body.

In this Retreat we will work with the practice of meditation in a very practical and down to earth way. We will introduce different techniques for exploring the inner space of awareness. This practice will be broken down into four key areas of focus reflecting 4 limbs from Patanjalis Yoga Sutras:

Asana (posture)
Pranayama (breath)

Into the Forest of Possibilities: Journeys with Tillai Kali and Ayyappan the Third Son of Shiva with Dr. Douglas Brooks

There is a compelling and powerful mythology in the Dancing Shiva Nataraja’s tradition that takes us to places rarely traveled within ourselves. These stories involve the strange and peculiar relationship that evolves between Shiva and his beloved Shakti and extends into their relationship with Vishnu who is both Shiva’s confidant and Shakti’s brother. As bizarre as the story becomes, what is of invaluable importance is what it tells us about ourselves---for here is where the worlds of dreams and shadows, empowerments and regrets, lucidity and darkness all coalesce into a spiritual path, rich and complex in meaning.

The beautiful goddess consort of Nataraja becomes the characters of Tillai Kali, Pratyangira, and Sarabesvari---all of whom bring a multiplex of feelings and ideas into the story of our lives.  Emergent in these tales is the less explored Ayyappan, also known as Shasta the Lord of the Ghosts, who teaches us about the powers of truth, betrayal, loyalty, and reconciliation. His role in this greater storytelling tradition shifts our focus and enriches our understanding in immeasurable ways.

In this seminar we will enter into the Forest of the Blinding Mangrove, where earth is sky and the forest canopy an ocean of possibilities, nourishing and toxic. Our aim is to create a deeper access to mythic consciousness and allow the power of Tantric storytelling to become a gateway to our very practical concerns of living in a complex, often puzzling and maddening world.

NO previous exposure to these stories or ideas is required. We will make this journey together with open minds and curious hearts, including practices of mantra, mudra, and meditation as well.

Schedule

Ayurvedic Medicine Workshop with Sonam Targee

Preparing the Body for Fall
Saturday 10am-12:30pm

Just as Winter is associated with Kapha dosha (water element) because of its damp/cold, and Summer is associated with Pitta dosha (fire element) because of its heat, Autumn is associated with Vata dosha (air and ether elements) because of its changeable nature. Ayurveda has a lot to say about how to manage Vata. The use of oils both internally and externally prevent the body from drying out, and this class will explore these in depth!

When lots of change is going on in Nature and the world around you, it’s important to stay centered and grounded thereby reducing stress levels and emotions such as anxiety, fear and worry are minimized. Lack of sleep is a Vata-related issue for many. This class will discuss pranayama, asana and herbal medicines to make SURE we all get a good night’s sleep!

Many of us suffer from the cold aspect of Vata. Pungent foods and herbs antidote the cold quite well!  pippli (Indian long-pepper) and ginger, cinnamon, and nutmeg are some of the readily available and inexpensive ways to stay warm. We shall explore other remedies & foods that can be easily prepared for this time of year.

There are some beautiful and mystical aspect to Vata dosha that can be utilized in the Autumn. It is no mistake that “all hallow’s eve” and “all Saint’s Day” are celebrated in October! Ayurveda recognizes this time of year as especially good to remember those family members who have passed on; Ether element is subtle, Air element is subtle, so our awareness can be subtle, and much more open to spiritual beings!  It is a good time to thank them for passing on their DNA!

This class is useful to beginners as well as those more advanced students, because it present many strategies to pacify VATA dosha – the dosha associated with bones, teeth, hearing, memory and nerves.

Womens Health
Saturday 2:00-4:30pm

Women’s Health

This lecture will cover the Ayurvedic and Ancient Universal Medicine perspectives on the hormonal phases of a woman’s life!

Menarche – the onset of menses

Menstruation – pain-free

Fertility – “preparing the field”

Pregnancy – fostering new life

Delivery – setting the stage for the perfect outcome

Nursing, and breast health

Libido and contraception

Menopause and bone health

Although Ayurveda and ancient Asian medicine do not talk about hormones directly, they are very skillful when it comes to creating a healthy context for the hormones to be properly balanced.

This is both a theoretical presentation, as well as a practicum. Many remedies will be introduced that give deep insight into the Ayurvedic world-view as well as those for giving symptomatic relief!

It has been 15 years since we opened our doors! Can you believe it?!  At that time we were one of the few store front yoga centers in the West Michigan area. It was like a signal fire! So many curious and dedicated students have passed through these doors and some have emerged as great teachers themselves. Many have gone on to open their own spaces and share these practices in West Michigan and beyond! Such a small room had such a large impact on the Yoga Scene in Michigan. It has been quite the ride that we all have gone on together!

One of our favorite memories was when we first hosted Desiree Rumbaugh in March of 2000. The studio construction was not finished so we had the workshop at the Dominican Center at Marywood. Really, it was like our soft opening. The workshop was scintillating with joy and you could tell it was the start of something great!

That first event soon evolved into hosting many more teachers, scholars, healers, musicians and artists at our center. Each time they come, our community expands. Their offerings are a true gift to everyone at From the Heart. We love and thank them all!

Since the beginning, our focus has always been on cultivating a deeper connection to Community through these beautiful practices. Self Knowledge and Creative Expression are the in-breath and out-breath of this focus. The more expression we celebrate in each other, the more our collective heart beats. Deep gratitude for your curiosity, studentship, and dedication over the years!

Many Blessings,

Rick & Behnje

Wisdom Warriors is a new class designed especially for dedicated practitioners who know what it means to remain youthful through the practice of yoga and other healthy lifestyle activities.
Wisdom Warriors is the perfect elixir of youth for anyone who wants to preserve their high level of health, flexibility and strength throughout their lifetime. It is intended to help people keep their practice strong and vital.

We slow it down to fit our needs while continuing to put forth the effort to understand the changes in our bodies as we go. We slow it down to fit our needs while continuing to put forth the effort to understand the changes in our bodies as we go. Rather than saying “I am too old for this”, we ask “what needs to get stronger or softer so this pose feels right for me”?

The Core of Feeling with Dr. Douglas Brooks

The Core of Feeling: Explorations in the Mythology of Shiva Nataraja, the Seven Dances, and the Nine Rasas

Deep inside us the core of consciousness resonates as feelings, the primal emotions that cut to the very heart of our being and begin the process of autobiography that is Self. In our extended sense of Self, we have mapped these feelings into our awareness of the world, into memories and language, into the social and cultural expressions of our humanity. At the foundation of these experiences is the theory of rasa, that essential the essence-feeling, sentiment, and "taste" that creates this ensemble of personal identity. In the mythologies of Shiva the Dancer Nataraja reside the symbolic maps for unraveling this relationship between core consciousness feelings and symbolic, extended Self awareness. This is some of the most beautiful, rich, and worthwhile study in all of yoga traditions because it leads us to practical and fecund experiential understanding, the kind that changes how we define private and public selves.

In this seminar we will learn this basic and foundational study called the rasas, trace the maps from core to extended consciousness, and place the theory of rasa within the image of the dancing Shiva as Seven Dances within Two Principles, what is called in Rajanaka Tantra in Sanskrit thesaptatandava-dvilasya-shastra. This remarkable mythology creates a forest of feelings and perceptions that take us into the heart of awareness from our own unconscious sources.

NO previous experience is expected or required. Bring an open mind, a wiling heart, and your playful imagination.

Benjy and Heather Wertheimer lead kirtan (sacred chanting) worldwide as the duo Shantala, with soul-stirring vocals, sacred lyrics and exotic instrumentation. The weaving of Benjy’s Indian classical singing and instrumentation with Heather’s soaring vocals is freshly original and profoundly moving. Together they create music with beauty, passion, and reverence. Shantala has performed and recorded internationally with such sacred music luminaries as Krishna Das, Deva Premal & Miten, and Jai Uttal. In summer 2008, they were named as one of the top “Wallahs to Watch” by Yoga + Joyful Living. Kirtan is a celebration of spirit through the chanting of sacred names, carrying the audience into a state of heightened awareness, bliss, and devotion. The audience is invited to participate fully through call-and-response chanting, dance, and meditation.

Heather Wertheimer is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist who combines her special love of both music and yoga to lead devotional chanting for yoga workshops and spiritual gatherings internationally. Heather has toured in the U.S. and abroad with her husband Benjy, Steve Gorn, Manose, and Deva Premal & Miten. Heather’s debut CD with Shantala, “Church of Sky,” was named by New Age Retailer as one of the top ten albums of 2004. It has been aired on radio stations nationwide. In April 2003, she and Benjy released “The Love Window,” a beautiful and well-loved collection of sacred chants. In 2007, they released “Sri,” their second popular kirtan CD, and their first live CD “LIVE in love” was released in 2008.

Benjy Wertheimer is an award-winning songwriter, vocalist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist (playing tabla, congas, percussion, esraj, guitar, and keyboards). Benjy has toured and recorded with such artists as Krishna Das, Deva Premal & Miten, Jai Uttal, Walter Becker (Steely Dan), and virtuoso guitarist Michael Mandrell. He has opened for such artists as Carlos Santana, Paul Winter, and Narada Michael Walden. A founding member of the internationally acclaimed Ancient Future world fusion music ensemble, Benjy also toured the U.S., Canada, and Japan with renowned bamboo flute master G.S. Sachdev. He studied Indian classical music for over 25 years with some of the greatest masters of that tradition (including Alla Rakha, Zakir Hussain, Ali Akbar Khan and Z. M. Dagar). Benjy’s CDs receive extensive airplay around the world, and his CD “Circle of Fire” went to #1 on the New Age radio charts in November 2002.

Sean Frenette is a guitarist/bard/multi-instrumentalist/composer/artist. His multi-faceted creative pursuits have led to many adventures including the opportunity to share music in many wonderful places with many beautiful people: three times at Carnegie Hall; in 2006 with a host of musical pioneers led by Edgar Meyer and Mike Marshall; in 2009 with master Indian musician Zakir Hussain and a coterie of young virtuosos; and in May of 2010 with composer/conductor John Adams and Ensemble ACJW (Academy, Carnegie, Juilliard, and Weill institute). Sean has been very active on the West Coast since his move to Portland, Oregon in 2008 playing with Matt Butler's Everyone Orchestra, kirtan artists Benjy and Heather Werthheimer of Shantala, Dave Stringer, singer Lindsey Stormo, and as a soloist. He also sings with the 8 part Estonian choir Trillium Voices.
